Surface Water Management

Strategy and Activities of the Program

Selection Criteria and Approval of the Projects

Suitable Time to Implement the Project: The best time to implement the program is from February to May in the summer since that is the time the tanks are dry and the fields are empty after the harvest. Until the tanks get dry and the crops are harvested the project cannot be implemented. Generally, the farmers and the village tractors will be idle in the summer. Therefore, summer is the only suitable time to implement this project.

Applications from the Community: Bala Vikasa is implementing the program since the year 2000 and many villages know that they can get support from Bala Vikasa. Therefore, the villagers who want to participate and get multiple benefits apply with a formal written request. The first come will be first served as the demand for the program is very high. Generally every year applications start to arrive from the month of January.

Criteria for Selection of the Villages: The following is the criteria for selection of the villages:

The villagers willing:

  • To get united and work in an organized way.
  • Excavate minimum 4000 tractor loads ( 9000 cubic meters) of silt.
  • To pay the cost of transportation and procure sufficient tractors (15 –20) every day.
  • To work without discrimination of caste, religion, politics etc
  • To elect a committee and work under the coordination of the committee

Field Assessment and Approval of the Project : Upon the receipt of the application, Bala Vikasa personnel will visit the village and organize a general body meeting in the village to make sure that people from ever section participate and understand the project aims and objectives. The villagers confirm the actual list of requirement in the village. At the same time there will be a visit to the tank to make sure that the tank is dry and the excavation work can be taken up. If everything is as per the criteria, initially a project will be approved to excavate 4,000 loads and it will be gradually increased as per the interest and active participation of the villagers. Some times there will be farmers from more than one village participating in the project as their lands are near to the tank project tank.
