Impact of the Program

The impact of the program is multiple, instant, assured and lasting in many aspects such as social, economic, psychological, environment, etc. The program is able to generate measurable impact on the lives of the people in the program villages in different forms with very minimum cost and with no technical complications as follows:

Impact - Water :
  • Water storing capacity of the tanks is increased by 10- 30 % due to silt excavation (depends on the tank size and amount of silt excavated).
  • Silt excavation fastened the process of water percolation and ground water recharge.
  • The water level in the open wells and bore wells in the radius of 2 kms from the tanks has increased by 20-30% (because of the water percolation) in the villages where the project is implemented. This could have increased more if there were normal rains.
  • Increased water yield in the irrigation sources such as open wells, tube wells help to increase the area of cultivation and increased income to farmers and employment to the rural farm labour.
  • Increased water in the ground water table improved the quality of water by reducing the fluoride content and concentration of other minerals.
  • Increased water facilities in the village reduced the drinking water problem in the villages and also helped to improve the green in the villages.
  • Some wells which are abandoned are being utilized since the water levels increased.

Impact- Soil Fertility :

  • Application of silt in improved the soil fertility and increased the crop production by 20-30% percent depending on the type of the soil and climatic conditions.
  • Application of silt reduced the chemical application by 50-60% reducing the cost of production and improving the environment.
  • The impact of the chemical fertilizers was for a period of few months where as the impact of the silt is for 3 – 5 years.
  • Increased crop production increases the income
  • Application of silt improved the moisture holding capacity of the soil which reduces the water consumption by 15-25% depending on the type of the soil.
  • Crops became resistant to many diseases reducing the application of chemical pesticides.

Impact-Employment Opportunities:

  • Generates employment farm labour to spread the silt in the farms (1 man day for spreading 5 tractor loads). This reduces the migration from the villages during the summer season.
  • Income to tractors owners. About 1000 tractors get work on an average of 2–3 weeks in the season every day with double shift.
  • 60 Rural unemployed educated youth are given temporary jobs to monitor the implementation of the program.

Impact-Environment :

  • The plantation program in the villages helps to improve the greenery and natural ecological balanced environment in the villages is established.
  • Increased greenery enhances the rains.
  • Rain water conservation in the tanks help to conserve the nature in different aspects.

IImpact - Social :

  • Unity among the villagers is increased.
  • New and effective leadership is evolved with commitment and effectiveness
  • The desiltation committees are encouraged to unite the villagers and undertake more development activities with the successful experience gained from the project.

Impact - Economic :

  • More production because of due to increased soil fertility and availability of water for irrigation in the tank, bore wells and open wells. This means more income.
  • Increased water out put from the open and bore wells and also increased moisture holding capacity of the soil will reduce the electricity bills.
  • Fishermen will have enough water to cultivate the fish in the tanks
  • More income facilitates better living and education for children
  • More water leading to better health and Hygiene
  • More encouragement and happiness in farming in the families
  • Farmers are psychologically encouraged to do farming

Impact in General :

  • We can go on and on in saying multiple and inter related benefits. The above are the direct results. But there are so many unsaid indirect benefits. This is an example of integrated sustainable development. It's a result oriented and cost effective. Makes the beneficiaries real partners in every stage of the program. It's a cost effective program.
