Case Study
Parvathagiri village is a Mandal headquarters for about 20 villages. It is one of the biggest villages in the district with a population of 2500 people. It is located at a distance of 25 Kms from Warangal town.
This village has an irrigation tank of 100 acres size right next to the village. Since the tank is attached to the village people use the water for different needs. But due to silt accumulation the storing capacity of the tank decreased and the tank is getting dry every summer and people face many water shortage problems. The Tank was constructed about 200 years back by the kings then ruled the region. The state government implemented a small program of desiltation under food for work program couple of years ago. Since it is a small program 1000 trips of silt was excavated and benefited by 20 farmers. These 20 farmers had good crop and income compared to many other
farmers in the same environment.
The multiple, instant and assured results enjoyed by these 20 people motivated the villager to use the silt. The farmers who applied the silt have good crops and good money. Its very significant to the farmer. They feel sorry for not applying. They want to use the silt this year. Therefore, they came to Bala Vikasa in the month of January and requested to support.
Like in any other village Bala Vikasa conducted a meeting and motivated the villages, organize the committee and approved the support to excavate 6,000 tractor loads as per the list attached to the application. From the day one the farmers started to work day and night providing sufficient tractors. The committee is very effective and efficient in organizing and monitoring.
As the project was in progress, the farmers who did not gave their names first wanted to get the opportunity and the list is increasing. The approved trips are not sufficient. The committee members represented the villagers and asked for extra trips with another application. Bala Vikasa approved another 4000 trips looking at the unity and interest of the villages. The work was in good progress with active participation of the farmers and effective leadership of the committee members. As the work is coming to end the competition among the villager increased. New members and the farmers who have already taken in the first phase want to have more. The farmers who don't have money started to borrow the money as they are confident of the profits and they don't want to miss the opportunity. This is an indication of good awareness and competition among the villages. During a monitoring visit by BV to the village, about 200 farmers gathered at the tank and requested to approve for another 8000
trips and it was approved as the farmers are very much interested.
The machine worked for about one 50 days in day and night shifts and excavated 18000 tractor loads in a record time. The success of the village was published in many news papers which motivated others. The villagers from neighboring villages to came to the village to see how the work is being implemented. The politicians and officials visited to encourage the villages.
The villages are now so happy that they got the opportunity to implement the program. They are sure of making good crop and good money. One old people in the village say that they are happy to see that the tank is back to its full storing capacity. They said they will now have the water all through the year. They are sure of increase in the ground water and increased facilities for irrigation. One of the villager said that this is the first time in the village he notice that people work with so much unity and good leadership and he wishes the villagers continue to
work with the same spirit in the future for further development of the village.
The villagers are very grateful to Bala Vikasa for the support and encouragement. They are now motivated to undertake the plantation program in the months of August/September. They are anxious to receive the best award from Bala Vikasa for excavating large amount of silt.
